Tour Description

Your tour begins with the history of Rome before transitioning to the soulful hills of Tuscany. Walk in the steps of Florence’s greatest artists, and bask in the warm countryside of Lake Como. This package includes many forms of transportation before ending on the canals of Venice. It’s the Slow Life, but it will be over too fast.

  • Start the day exploring Rome with a private guide. You’ll see such marvels as the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Venezia and the Spanish Steps. As you wander the city, perhaps stop in at a bar for a quick coffee, or indulge in some gelati

  • Today, visit the smallest country on earth: Vatican City. Enter the city walls and embark on a privately guided tour of the Vatican that includes not only the famous museums, but also the stunning Sistine Chapel

  • Begin the day with a drive to the medieval city of Siena. It is best known for the Piazza del Campo, the site of the twice-annual Palio (a horse race that goes around the edge of the oval square). Be sure to visit the small but stunning Siena Cathedral, and see the statue of the capitoline wolf which was brought here by the sons of Remus, the founder of Rome. It has been the city’s symbol ever since
  • Continue to Monteriggioni, another Tuscan hill town that was built by the Sienese to defend their territory against the Florentines in the 13th century. Learn a little more about the circular walls and 14 towers which played a significant role in the attacks staged by the Bishop of Volterra
  • Check in at Castello

  • We travel towards the medieval town of Colle Val d’Elsa and explore on foot
  • Afterwards enjoy a short stroll and a coffee break before continuing on to the medieval village of San Gimignano, once an important stop along the ‘Via Francigena’, which connected Canterbury to Rome
  • San Gimignano is sometimes referred to as having the only “skyscrapers” in Tuscany – stone towers that remain from medieval times and you’ll have ample opportunity to explore this romantic old town
  • After our visit to San Gimignano we will stop in one of the many wineries along the way to taste some of the famous local produce
  • Overnight at Castello

  • Florence is one of the most culturally rich and beautiful cities in Italy, known to many as the beating heart of Tuscany. The Medicis, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Brunelleschi, Machiavelli, Donatello and Michelangelo all lived in Florence at the height of their creative reign
  • A walk to Piazzale Michelangelo to take in beautiful views of the city is a lovely way to while away the day

  • This morning we start our exploration of Bellagio, situated on the Punta Spartivento (the “Point that divides the Wind”), where the two arms of Lake Como meet. Incredibly scenic, with inspiring views of the lake and the distant mountains, brightly painted houses adorned with flower-filled balconies, a bustling waterfront and a maze of meandering cobblestone streets. Bellagio is a delightful place to explore
  • After the brief orientation walk of Bellagio, board a ferry and visit the splendid 17th century Villa Carlotta, whose famous works of art and terraced gardens of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias have inspired poets and travelers for centuries
  • Afternoon at leisure

  • Today you will take an orientation walk in the morning. Your leader will also take you by vaporetto, or ‘water bus,’ to the island of San Giorgio, where you can climb the bell tower and witness expansive views of Venice
  • The afternoon will be at leisure and you might like to visit some museums or take a trip to some of the outlying islands. The Grand Canal, the quaint shopfronts that line the Rialto Bridge and the Piazza and Basilica di San Marco are all worthy sights to visit
  • It’s equally satisfying to simply meander around the tiny cobbled streets and discover the beautiful markets, cafes, galleries and churches
